Your course videos are being edited like your YouTube videos
The same lesson, edited for a paywall, is a different edit, because it has a different job.
You finish a lesson. It goes up on the channel, and the same cut, or something very close to it, goes into the course somebody has paid for. Same editor, same template, same rhythm. The material is identical, so changing nothing looks like the sensible thing to do.
It is the one place that instinct is wrong. A course video and a channel video are the same footage doing two different jobs, and a job is what an edit is actually built around.
Why is a course video not a channel video behind a paywall?
Because the two are trying to make different things happen.
A channel video is trying to keep somebody watching who did not have to be there. A course video is watched by somebody who already paid, already committed, and now needs to come out of it able to do the thing. One is fighting for attention. The other has the attention and has to turn it into understanding. Every decision below follows from that difference.
What changes in the cut?
The shape of it, before anything else.
A channel video is cut as one flow: caught early, held through the middle, pointed at something at the end. A course video is cut as a curriculum. Sections begin and end where the learning does, transitions are visible rather than hidden, and the student always knows where they are and what just finished. A seamless cut is a virtue on the channel and a mild obstacle in a lesson, because a learner needs the seams to find their way back to the part they did not get the first time.
What are you actually optimising for?
Completion, not continuation.
On the channel the target is that watching continues, and the retention graph is how you read it. In a course the target is that the learning completes, which is a different thing and occasionally the opposite one. A digression that lifts retention on a public video, because it is entertaining, is a leak in a lesson, because it is time the student spends not learning the thing they came for. When the two targets pull apart, a course edit follows the second one and lets the first one go.
Why does the music sit differently?
Because instruction cannot be allowed to compete with demonstration.
When speech comes in on a course video, the music ducks underneath it, held down by sidechain compression so the words always win. On a public video the opposite is sometimes right: there is a performance in a channel piece, and letting the instrument sit forward is part of what people came to hear. The same content, the same two tracks, and the balance decided in opposite directions, because one is a performance and the other is a lesson.
So what does treating them the same actually cost?
A course that is slightly harder to learn from than it should be, sold at a price that assumes it is not.
None of these differences is large on its own. Together they are the gap between a course that feels like a paid product and one that feels like the channel with a login in front of it, and a student notices the second kind without being able to say why. Same care is not the same as same style. Same care means cutting to the standard of the place the video will actually live, and a single house style applied everywhere is repetition that is easy to mistake for consistency.
Open your last course upload and your last channel upload, and ask whether anything in the cut knows the difference. If the answer is no, you have found the most valuable afternoon in your back catalogue.

This is a service, and the method is written down.
Everything above came out of doing the work rather than writing about it. If you want the method instead of the story, it runs in order on one page.
Start with a free audit
Tell us where your content is now. We will come back with what we would change and what result to expect.
A person reads the channel and writes the audit by hand: a considered read typically takes three working days. That is the usual shape, not a promised turnaround. We use these details only to reply to you: no lists, no lurking.
What you will get
A fit snapshot: where your channel stands, and whether we are a match.
Two to three opportunities: specific, prioritised, yours to keep.
A recommended next step, even if that step is not us.
The audit is free and commits you to nothing: nobody follows up with a call you did not ask for.
