What to spend on before you film

Which of the fixable things to fix first, when the budget stretches to one of them this quarter and the shoot is already in the calendar.

Built for
buying gear before knowing why, upgrades bought in the wrong order, shiny kit fixing nothing and spending before the free fixes.
The short version

Is this for you? For the temptation to buy gear before knowing why, or in the wrong order. Not if your setup is already settled and doing its job; this is for the budget with one thing to fix this quarter, not for kit that already works.

What leaves your plate. The free changes named before any spend at all, the order they come in treated as the actual advice, and equipment recommended only where it is genuinely the answer, with a figure attached.

What starts working. A decision about the next filming money you could defend to yourself, and the free fixes that come before it, in the order they pay back.

The smallest way in. A free audit: three fields, and a written reading back, usually within about three working days. It commits you to nothing.

What to read next. The five levels to see where this fits, or the casework to see it done.

Where buying equipment stops being the first answer

The first recommendation is usually to spend nothing

Where the microphone sits, which profile the camera records in, whether the opening gets a second take: none of that costs anything at all, and between them they account for most of what makes footage hard to work with afterwards. That gets said before any conversation about money, because a studio that opens with a shopping list has not looked at the problem yet.

Where equipment is genuinely the answer, it comes with a budget attached

One partner recording their screen had a frame rate problem and a microphone problem. What went back was a short list of workable capture settings and microphone suggestions that fitted the budget already in hand. Nothing was added to a scope. A studio that only ever recommends more of its own services has stopped being a consultant and become a shop.

The order is the advice

A room before a microphone. A second angle before a better camera. A second take of the opening before either of those. Most people buy in the reverse order, which is how somebody ends up trying to solve a room with a microphone and being disappointed by both. Where there is money for exactly one change this quarter, the recommendation is specific and it arrives with its reasoning beside it.

The floor is lower than people expect

A modest camera in a considered room beats an expensive one in a bad room, every time. Most people asking this question are one free change away from footage that grades and mixes properly, and saying so costs us a sale we would rather not have made.

What each one costs to settle before the day

The roomfree · something soft in it and a closed door, before any microphone is considered
Microphone positionfree · a stand moved is the cheapest quality change available to anybody
Camera profilefree · a setting, chosen once and then kept
Frame ratefree · agreed once across every camera and every screen recording
A second take of the openingfree · minutes on the day, and the hook becomes a choice
Continuity after a breakfree · a habit, plus a note the crew reads before rolling again
Headroom for the vertical cropfree · framing, decided while the camera is still being placed
Something filmed for the second platformfree · one line on the shot card
A second angleequipment · the largest step up from one-camera footage when it has a job the first camera cannot do; where it would only repeat the first, a better camera or a second microphone spends the money better
Voice and source on separate channelsequipment · the point at which audio stops being repairable

The two moments this decision gets made

When the decision gets made

Before a shoot day and before an equipment order, which are two different moments and usually two different conversations. It also happens continuously, because every delivery shows what is still costing an edit real time, and therefore what is still worth spending money on.

What comes back

A short list in priority order, what each item costs beside it, and the cheapest one marked. Brief enough to be read on a phone. Honest enough to say when the answer is that nothing needs buying this quarter and the money belongs somewhere else entirely.

Where this page stops

This is the spending decision and nothing else. What to do on the day belongs to the pre-production line: the checklist a crew holds, the camera and lighting positions, the microphone design and the shot card. Nobody should be reading a consultancy note in a room where the lights are already up.

Most of what ruins footage is free to fix, which is why the interesting question is where the money goes once those are done.

The free fixes come first, in order, and the invoice waits behind them.

What changes for you

A decision you can defend to yourself about where the next money spent on filming should go, and a list of the free changes that come before it, in the order they pay.

Before strategy is discussed, we read the channel: what it publishes, what it promises and where the two part ways. The audit comes back in writing, so the first call starts from evidence rather than introductions.

A quick fit check

Request your free audit.

Three fields, and a written reading back: a fit snapshot, two or three prioritised opportunities, and a recommended next step.

A bare domain, a full URL or a channel link.
Received. We reply in writing, usually within three working days.
That did not send. Try once more, or write to us instead.

A person reads the channel and writes the audit by hand: a considered read typically takes three working days. That is the usual shape, not a promised turnaround. We use these details only to reply to you: no lists, no lurking.

What you will get

A fit snapshot: where your channel stands, and whether we are a match.

Two to three opportunities: specific, prioritised, yours to keep.

A recommended next step, even if that step is not us.

The audit is free and commits you to nothing: nobody follows up with a call you did not ask for.

The casework shows all of this done.

The case studies are the same work with the numbers, the sources and the dates attached.
